Onboard Detection of Natural Sulfur on a Glacier via an SVM and Hyperion Data FINAL2

چکیده
Onboard classification of remote sensing data is of general interest given that it can be used as a trigger to initiate alarms, data download, additional higher-resolution scans, or more frequent scans of an area without ground interaction. In our case, we study the sulfur-rich BorupFiord glacial springs in Canada utilizing the Hyperion instrument aboard the EO-1 spacecraft. This system consists of naturally occurring sulfur-rich springs emerging from glacial ice, which are a known environment for microbial life. The biological activity of the spring is associated with sulfur compounds that can be detected remotely via spectral analysis. This system may offer an analog to far more exotic locales such as Europa where remote sensing of biogenic indicators is of considerable interest. Unfortunately, spacecraft processing power and memory is severely limited which places strong constraints on the algorithms available. Previous work has been performed in the generation and execution of an onboard SVM (support vector machine) classifier to autonomously identify the presence of sulfur compounds associated with the activity of microbial life. However, those results were limited in the number of positive examples available to be labeled. In this paper we extend the sample size from 1 to 7 example scenes between 2006 and 2008, corresponding to a change from 18 to 235 positive labels. Of key interest is our assessment of the classifier’s behavior on non-sulfur-bearing imagery far from the training region. Selection of the most relevant spectral bands and parameters for the SVM are also explored.

Onboard Detection of Active Canadian Sulfur Springs: A Europa Analogue
We discuss a current, ongoing demonstration of insitu onboard detection in which the Earth Observing-1 spacecraft detects surface sulfur deposits that originate from underlying springs by distinguishing the sulfur from the ice-rich glacial background, a good analogue for the Europan surface. In this paper, we describe the process of developing the onboard classifier for detecting the presence o...
متن کاملRole of smile correction in mineral detection on hyperion data
This work aims to extract the mineralogical constituents of the Lahroud Hyperion scene situated in the NW of Iran. Like the other push-broom sensors, Hyperion images suffer from spectral distortions, namely the smile effect. The corresponding spectral curvature is defined as an across-track wavelength shift from the nominal central wavelength, and alters the pixel spectra. The common “column me...

Introduction: The Autonomous Sciencecraft Experiment (ASE) is a JPL-led, New Millennium Program mission containing new technology in the form of software to be flown on the Earth Observer-1 (EO1) satellite in early 2004 [1, 2]. This new technology will facilitate an artificially intelligent machine with autonomous science-driven capabilities. Among the ASE flight software is a set of onboard sc...

It is strongly desirable to accurately detect the clouds in hyperspectral images onboard 1 before compression. However, conventional onboard cloud detection methods are not appropriate 2 to all situation such as shadowed cloud or darken snow covered surfaces which are not identified 3 properly in the NDSI test. In this paper, we propose a new spectral–spatial classification strategy to 4 enhanc...

Abstract- With the advancement and development of computer network technologies, the way for intruders has become smoother; therefore, to detect threats and attacks, the importance of intrusion detection systems (IDS) as one of the key elements of security is increasing. One of the challenges of intrusion detection systems is managing of the large amount of network traffic features. Removing un...
